This photomicrograph revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by the fungal organism, Exserohilum rostratum. In this particular view, you will note that the ellipsoid-shaped conidia were sprouting from atop filamentous hyphae. The conidial cells are contained within sacs, instead of being sequestered in septate, confined spaces, which is known as being distoseptate, and the proximal end of each conidium, i.e., the end that is attached to the conidiophore, gives rise to a protuberant, and truncated hilum. During the multistate fungal meningitis outbreak of 2012, the CDC and FDA confirmed the presence of E. rostratum in unopened medication vials of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate.
