Under a magnification of 475X, this photomicrograph reveals some of the ultrastructural features exhibited by the dermatophytic fungus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes including numbers of microconidia and macroconidia, which are the organism’s reproductive cells, otherwise known as spores. These fungal organisms were cultivated atop wort agar, which is a medium ideal for the growing of fungi, particularly yeasts, while inhibiting bacterial growth. The chemical composition of wort agar duplicates that of naturally occurring wort, which is a substance produced during the mashing process used in the creation of beer or whisky.
