Description:This 1970 image showed former Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Engineering Services staff member, Jesse Herringdine, as he was installing a glove port in a Class III isolation cabinet located inside what was once the organization’s Maximum Security Laboratory. Also visible in this view were a number of other containment cabinets, which were airtight, and able to contain highly-pathogenic organisms, allowing for observation, while keeping them from contaminating the laboratory environment.
Biological safety cabinets and other physical containment devices were used, whenever conducting procedures that have a high probability for generating aerosols. These labs were also referred to as the “Box Labs”.
