This 1968 photograph depicted former Centers for Disease Control, CDC, epidemiologist, and one of the former directors of the Global Smallpox Eradication Program 1966 – 1970, J. Donald Millar, MD, DTPH, standing next to a map of Western Africa and the coastal nations surrounding Nigeria, a description of the Yoruban beliefs concerning Shapona, the deity of smallpox who is considered the intermediary between man and God, and a votive sculpture representing Shapona.
