Caption:
This 1969 image depicts the face of a male Sierra Leone patient from the town of Koindu, in the District of Kailahun. This was a possible case of modified smallpox, in which the patient had received a smallpox vaccination some months before. He was living in an isolation village, where the regional market had sustained the ravages of a heavy, prolonged smallpox epidemic. Note the sparse amount of maculopapular skin lesions dispersed over his face.
