This 1968 image depicts close view of a patient’s left ankle, which shows you a method used to extract a Guinea worm, Dracunculus medinensis, from one of the leg veins. Dracunculiasis, more commonly known as Guinea worm disease, is a preventable infection caused by the parasite D. medinensis. Infection affects poor communities in remote parts of Africa that do not have safe water to drink.
