This illustration depicts a dorsal view of a green bottle fly, Lucilia illustris, a member of the family, Calliphoridae. In the field forensic entomology, this fly has become an important contributor in the determination of what is known as the post-mortem interval (PMI), which is the amount of time passed after a person has died, for they are normally, one of the first flies to light upon fresh corpses. The appearance of Lucilia illustris larvae, and timing their maturation into adult flies, can be integral in the determination of a time of death.
