Photographed in Yaba, a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria, this historic 1967 image depicts a group of three people inside a laboratory setting. At left, was microbiologist/virologist, Nathaniel Rothstein, MS, who was standing next to two laboratory technicians. The activity involved using a machine known as a lyophilizer, which could create transportable, freeze-dried vaccine, able to be carried into the rural areas of the country in order to inoculate inhabitants during the worldwide Smallpox Eradication Campaign of the 1960s and 1970s.
