Description:Magnified 125X, this image depicts the morphologic characteristics displayed by a single Gram-positive, Actinomyces bovis bacterial microcolony, of the strain, A-1109, which was cultivated, for a 48 – 72 hour time period, on an unknown culture medium.
Actinomyces spp. are normally found in the oral cavity, and are opportunistic pathogens usually seen as pathogenic only in immunosuppressed patients. Lesions involve long standing swelling, suppuration and the formation of an abscess, or granuloma.
