This image depicts the dorsal surface of the tongue in the case of an elderly African-American male, due to what was determined to be a secondary syphilitic infection. Note the furrowed appearance, and the papillae-free, or desquamated, smooth lingual surface. Syphilis is caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum.
