Under a magnification of 100X, this photomicrograph reveals some of the pathologic morphology displayed by a hair shaft from a Colombian white-faced capuchin, Cebus capucinus, indicative of the disease known as, black piedra, which is caused by the fungal organism, Piedraia hortae. Note the nodular deformation associated with the hair shaft’s infestation of the P. hortae organisms.
