Description:A closer view of PHIL 12459, this photograph depicts the colonial morphology displayed by Gram-negative Pseudomonas stutzeri bacteria, which were grown on a medium of sheep’s blood agar (SBA), for a 24 hour time period, at a temperature of 37°C.
Though widely distributed throughout the environment, as a human pathogen, Pseudomonas stutzeri is found to be opportunistic in nature, infecting individuals who display a compromised immune system, such as would be found in a chemotherapy, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient. Interestingly, however, though rarely pathogenic, this organism was first isolated from a human spinal fluid sample.
