Pictured here, in this December 1975 image, was the paddlewheel steamer built in 1924, nicknamed The Rocket, as it traveled along Bangladesh’s Meghna River, at a point where the river meets the Ganges Delta, and flows into the Bay of Bengal. Travel by boat was the major means of transport throughout the southern region of Bangladesh.

PHIL images 1191, 3258, 5664, and 12290 through 12367, were supplied by Dr. Michael Schwartz, and capture the epidemiologic-related activities undertaken by healthcare providers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and local Bangladeshi healthcare workers, during their successful attempt to eradicate smallpox.
