This diagram depicts how the science of epidemiology was put into practice by the health workers who participated in the 1970s smallpox eradication efforts in Bangladesh and elsewhere.

PHIL images 1191, 3258, 5664, and 12290 through 12367, were supplied by Dr. Michael Schwartz, and capture the epidemiologic-related activities undertaken by healthcare providers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and local Bangladeshi healthcare workers, during their successful attempt to eradicate smallpox.
