This 1955 photograph depicted the penis of a Brisbane, Australia patient, displaying morphologic changes indicative of a condition referred to as hypospadias, or bifid penis, making the act of urination very difficult, which was demonstrated here. The anomaly occurs during fetal development, at a time when the male genitalia are morphologically evolving, i.e., approximately the 6th week of gestation. It involves an incomplete fusion of what is structurally known as the genital tubercle, resulting in a bilateral duplication of the penis, known as diphallia, and in this case, an accompanying hypospadias, or shortened urethra.
