This historic 1963 photograph depicted laboratorian, Bill Hope, as he was processing horse blood, which would subsequently be used in the large-scale production of reagents. At the time of this photograph, what is now known as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was until 1970, then known as the Communicable Disease Center. Though Mr. Hope was wearing gloves, and a lab coat with a head cover, modern day protocols now call for the laboratorian executing these tasks, to wear additional personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety goggles, and a facemask.
