Description:This historic image depicted Dr. Hersey, Capt., U.S.A.F., as he was conducting an infectivity study, using embryonated chicken eggs, and implementing the yolk sac inoculation method, in order to introduce infected tissue culture fluid into each egg. The purpose of the experiment was to test whether or not Rickettsial organisms would grow in this specific tissue cultue system.
Modern day protocols now call for the laboratorian executing such tasks, to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety goggles, gloves, and a face mask.
