After approximately 10-days, this image depicts three erythematous chigger bites, on a patient’s arm. Note the red welts, or blister-like appearance at each of the three bites. Each welt measured approximately 3-4mm in diameter. Chiggers are actually the larval-staged organism in the life cycle of red mites, or harvest mites. They are arthropods, and members of the family, Trombiculidae. Chiggers feed on skin cells, not on blood. It is the manner in which they harvest their meal of host skin that causes the acute itching and inflammation on the skin surface.
