This historic 1966 image, depicted a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) laboratory technician, as he was operating an AutoAnalyzer®, manufactured by the former Technicon Corporation, in order to conduct a protein bound iodine (PBI) determination. The AutoAnalyzer® used a continuous flow analysis (CFA) technique, which automated what was once a manual process of sample analysis. Automation quantitatively increased the sample analyses per day, from but a few, to hundreds, or thousands per day, while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.
