This historic 1964 image depicted a Beckman Model B spectrophotometer that was used in the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) laboratories. A spectrophotometer measures the intensity of light, as a function of its spectral constituents, including visible, near-ultraviolet, and near-infrared wavelengths. The Model B spectrophotometer, introduced in 1949, replaced the glass prism used by its previous models with a more advanced quartz prism, which improved its UV capabilities. In a modern day laboratory setting, a spectrophotometer still occupies an important niche in the realm of biochemistry, and clinical chemistry.
