Caption:
This scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural features seen on the surface of two Acanthamoeba polyphaga protozoa. The amoeba on the right is in its trophozoite stage, able to move about using pseudopodia it extends from its exterior. The amoeba on the left has entered into a cystic stage, whereupon, its cell wall has doubled in thickness, shielding it from adverse environmental conditions, and a state of dormancy has settled over the organism.
