Magnified 1796X this 2002 scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by three Hartmannella vermiformis amoebae cysts. The amoeba assumes the cystic stage of its lifecycle under harsh conditions like drought, or in the event of accumulated toxins in its environment, which can reduce its metabolic requirements. Under these circumstances, the protozoa produces a protective coat, and goes dormant to await better conditions. See the link below for more on the study that inspired the creation of this image.
