Magnified 5756X, this 2002 scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by two Hartmannella vermiformis amoebae trophozoites. Note that one of the amoebae has assumed a highly distorted shape, having extruded a number of pseudopodia, as it moved across the coupon surface. The trophozoite stage of an amoeba’s lifecycle is its vegetative phase, spent feeding, moving about, and reproducing. This free-living protozoan moves in response to chemical signals in its environment by extending pseudopodia, or false feet, a number of which are seen in this image. See the link below for more on the study that inspired the creation of this image.
