Tropical storm Hanna was captured using data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite on September 1, 2008, at 1418 UTC (10:18 AM EDT). Hanna was upgraded to a hurricane by the National Hurricane Center at 1730 UTC (1:30 PM EDT). Heavy thunderstorms with heights of over 10.5-miles (17 km) were observed by the TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) in the eastern side of Hanna.
The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a joint mission between NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) designed to monitor and study tropical rainfall.
