This image depicts a frontal view of a Petri dish culture plate, which contained a blood agar growth medium that had been inoculated with Gram-negative, Serratia marcescens bacilli. Note the induced hemolytic effect, evident as a halo surrounding each of the bacterial colonies. In these lightened area, a lysis of red blood cells (RBCs) contained in the blood agar medium had taken place.
