Under a magnification of 50X, and prepared using a Gömöri staining technique, this photomicrograph reveals histopathologic changes indicating the presence of the dematiaceous fungal organism, Phialophora parasitica. Known to be a causative agent for chromoblastomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis, which affect the subcutaneous tissues, in the case of phaeohyphomycosis, many organ systems may be affected, even becoming disseminated throughout the body.
