Magnified 2000X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image depicted some of the exoskeletal details found at the distal-most tip of one of the legs of an unidentified mosquito discovered in the suburbs of Decatur, Georgia. The exoskeleton, or outer surface of this arthropod, affords it with support and mobility, as well as organs specialized in sensorial acquisition. In this particular view, you’ll note a number of very small setae, or hairs, and scales that assist in both the act of flight, and thermoregulation of the insect’s body temperature.
