This 1968 photograph depicted the scab that had formed at the site of a recent smallpox vaccination. However, this Brazilian patient had already contracted the smallpox virus, which is why you’ll note the characteristic maculopapular rash, which had spread over the skin of this patient’s upper arm and shoulder.
