Caption:
This 1962 image depicted the skin of a smallpox patient who had contracted the virus in Cardiff, Wales during an epidemic. These lesions were termed benign confluent variola, and were photographed on the second day of focal eruption. The characteristically lichenoid rash was composed of macules, and a few indurated papules, which were violaceous in color.
