This 1962 photograph depicted the face of a female smallpox patient in Cardiff, Wales during an epidemic. These facial dermatologic manifestations of the illness were termed fulminating variola major, and were accompanied by a cyanotic erythema of the upper face. The symptoms were photographed on the first day of onset.
