Caption:
This 1962 photograph depicted the face and upper chest of a young male smallpox patient in Cardiff, Wales, during an epidemic. These lesions were classified as vaccinial-modified, variola major, for in this case, the patient, who’d been successfully vaccinated, had contracted the disease five days earlier. These facial eruption sites coincided with the sites of previous acne vulgaris eruptions. See PHIL 10419 for a palmar view of this patient's left hand for the presence of additional lesions.
