Caption:
This 1968 photograph depicted a map of Western Africa, and the coastal nations surrounding Nigeria, a description of the Yoruban beliefs concerning Shapona, the deity of smallpox, who is considered the intermediary between man and God, and a votive sculpture representing Shapona. Yoruba is both an African population, mainly occupying the countries of Nigeria and Benin Republic, and the belief system practiced by these individuals. It is to deities, like Shapona, to whom one prays out of respect, and hope in alleviating the devastation wrecked by diseases like smallpox.
