This computer generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world, Second Life. This was the fourth design stage of the avatar. In preparation for the first CDC Health Fair, which took place inside Second Life in October 2006, the avatar was outfitted with a more corporate clothing, more realistic facial features and hair, as well as a CDC badge, in order to more fully simulate a trade show booth attendant, and to reinforce the link to the CDC’s brand identity. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health’, to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space.
