This image was created in 2009, by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Public Health Advisor, Phyllis Nichols, M.P.H., a staff member in the Healthy Communities Program Office (formerly the Steps Program), in the Division of Adult and Community Health. It depicts a number of seniors at a Philadelphia, Chinese Senior Center, participating in CDC's Healthy Communities' Program, "Steps to a HealthierUS. Here, these attendees were doing Tai Chi, as a way to increase access to opportunities for physical fitness.
Nichols says her favorite thing about her job is being part of a national community health movement and visiting Healthy Communities sites, where I have the opportunity to see firsthand, the excellent community health work conducted.
The image earned Nichols a tie for Third Place award in the 2009 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of International Programs. CDC Connects is the organizations internally-published public health news site.
