This photograph depicted disaster relief volunteer workers as they were organizing a large supply of food, which was donated to victims of hurricane Hugo. Late in the evening of September 21, 1989, the eye of Hurricane Hugo struck the coast of South Carolina north of Charleston. Winds of 135 mph, a tidal surge of 12-17 feet, and heavy rains killed dozens of people, and caused 7 billion dollars in damage. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) personnel were deployed to assist in the control of communicable disease, and safety-related issues.
