This photomicrograph of an esophageal tissue sample, reveals some of the histopathology exhibited by a mucosal infection, which had been caused by a Candida sp. fungal organism, in a case of the opportunistic infection, candidiasis. The genus Candida includes eight species of fungi. Candidiasis is usually limited to the skin and mucous membranes.
