This photomicrograph of a mucicarmine stained lung tissue specimen, was harvested from an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient with cryptococcosis. Histopathology reveals a widened alveolar septum, containing a few inflammatory cells, and numerous C. neoformansyeast forms. Using this staining method, the inner layer of the yeast capsule stained red.
