Caption:
This historic 1947 image, provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and obtained from the Nat. Institutes of Health’s Photographic Unit, depicted a metallic arm band on a person’s right wrist, which contained a photosensitive film. Analyzed on a regular basis, this simple device was intended to reveal, whether or not the wearer was being subjected to a high level of radioactivity. The higher the levels of radioactivity to which the wearer was exposed, would be revealed as the film changes its appearance. The other wrist bore a wrist watch mainly for comparative purposes. See PHL 9587 for a look at the band alone.
