This October 1947 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a stonecutter, who was shaping a granite gravestone by using a powered drill sander, while inside a Kansas workshop. . This man was not wearing any barrier to airborne dust, like a filtered breathing apparatus. Workers like this mason, can be exposed to potential respiratory health hazards as well as other physical injuries when working in the stone cutting and quarrying industries.
