This October 1947 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a worker cutting the edge of a granite gravestone in a Kansas workshop, using an unidentifiable handheld implement. Standing next to the worker was an industrial hygienist, sampling the air in order to test for the presence of, or the quantity of airborne particulates liberated by the stone working process. Workers can be exposed to potential respiratory health hazards, as well as other physical injuries when working in stone cutting and quarrying industries.
