This October 1947 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a stonecutter, who was in the process of carving a granite gravestone with a pneumatic drill in a Kansas workshop. The worker was wearing appropriate eye protection, but not sporting the requisite filtered respirator, or mask, which would have limited his exposure to airborne granite dust particulates. Workers can be exposed to potential respiratory health hazards, as well as other physical injuries, when working in stonecutting and quarrying industries. In industrial settings like this, workers can be exposed to potential respiratory health hazards, especially when working in a chemical industry setting.
