This 1947 photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a stone quarry somewhere in Indiana. Visible were excavated granite blocks, arranged in piles, railroad tracks that were running through the work area, derricks (fixed cranes), and an overhead pulley system made up of sky-guy and deadman cables. Under conditions like those depicted here, workers could be exposed to potential physical injuries, as well as respiratory, or dermatologic irritants.
