This historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Reprinted from the May, 1951, “Industrial Hygiene Newsletter”, the image depicted a public health worker using an inexpensive airflow measuring device called a velometer. The meter had been fitted with a probe that allowed samples to be taken in isolated spaces, like the one shown in this image, from behind the grate (see PHIL 9490). . The device measured concentrations of pollutants in the air.
