This 1948 historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Reprinted from the January, 1949, ”Industrial Hygiene Newsletter”, it depicted a Mine Safety Appliances Company (MSA), Midget Impinger apparatus, that was used to collect halogenated hydrocarbons (HHC). HHCs are a cardiovascular, or blood toxicant. In the 1940s and 1950s, the Industrial Hygiene Division (IHD) investigated hazards associated with many types of manufacturing activities. This design was an example of a measure meant to improve workplace safety by keeping vapors from escaping.
