This was one of two images (PHIL 9385, 9386), showing a young boy, who was using a microwave oven that had been installed beneath a kitchen countertop. Installed at this level, it was easily accessible by shorter individuals, people who use wheelchairs, and as was the case here, children.
“The Center for Universal Design (CUD) is a national information, technical assistance, and research center that evaluates, develops, and promotes accessible and universal design in housing, commercial and public facilities, outdoor environments, and products. The Center’s mission is to improve environments and products through design innovation, research, education and design assistance. Part of the College of Design at North Carolina State University (NCSU), Raleigh, NC, the Center promotes the concept of universal design in all design, construction, and manufacturing disciplines through research, design assistance, and training.”
