This transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image depicts what had been a thrombus, or blood clot, which had been due to an infection, caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, formerly known as Rickettsia tsutsugamushi. This scenario took place inside a mouse brain capillary. At least one rickettsial organism was visible within a sloughed endothelial cell. Note the marked capillary endothelial cell hypertrophy.
