This transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image depicts an Orientia tsutsugamushi bacterium, formerly known as Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, as it was undergoing the process of dividing, while within the cytoplasm of a mouse peritoneal mesothelial cell. Note the pinching-type of division, characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria, including rickettsial organisms.
