This transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image revealed an Orientia tsutsugamushi bacterium, formerly known as Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, as it was in the process of budding from a mouse peritoneal mesothelial cell. Note that the bacterium was still covered by the host cell’s plasma membrane.
