Caption:
This visually-impaired woman was using a walking stick in order to extend her reach enabling her to detect obstacles in her path. Using a sweeping motion was able to forewarn her of objects, as well as changes in terrain, which in this case was the sidewalk surface transitioning into the adjacent grassy surface. You can see how taking into account impairments like this, makes the process of designing publicly accessible environmental surroundings challenging, but necessary. See PHIL 9063 and 9064, for additional pictures of this person interacting within other environmental scenarios, while using her walking stick.
