Caption:
The visually-impaired woman in this image was depicted interacting with a restroom sign indicating that it was a women’s restroom, through its use of a large, blue, readily visible universal sign describing a female. Included in the signage was an auditory output device, which improved the ability for the sign to convey its message to a much greater degree. This was one of a series of images provided by North Carolina State University’s Center for Universal Design. “The Center for Universal Design is a national research, information, and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops, and promotes universal design in housing, public and commercial facilities, and related products.” See PHIL 9008 for a closer view of a men's room, and stairwell sign.
